An essential fatty acid extracted from the annual herb borage, starflower oil helps promote bone and joint health, brain function, metabolism regulation, and skin and hair growth. That is why this oil is widely used to treat a vast number of health problems. Starflower oil is a natural substance; hence, it is generally safe to use. However, it does not go without side effects.

Before you take any product containing starflower oil, you have to be aware first of the risks that may come with it. Usually, side effects occur when you take the oil with certain medications or under a specific condition like pregnancy. Listed below are the side effects of starflower oil:

  • Bruising or bleeding - The risk is higher when starflower oil is taken with medications that cause blood thinning such as warfarin and aspirin. Also, the risk for bleeding is increased when you take the oil with herbs that affect blood platelets like garlic, ginger, and ginkgo biloba. Starflower oil may worsen bleeding disorder, so avoid using it if you are suffering from that condition.
  • Liver problems - If you are currently suffering from liver disease, then you are advised against using starflower oil. The oil contains a substance called amabiline, which may damage the liver.
  • Gastrointestinal issues - If you take starflower oil, you might suffer from bloating, belching, indigestion, or diarrhea.
  • Drug interactions - Starflower oil contains gamma-linolenic acid, which can worsen the effects of drugs that are given to patients who have undergone organ transplant. When taken with phenothiazines (for schizophrenia treatment), starflower oil may increase the risk of seizures.
    Mild headaches and nausea - These side effects can be curbed by taking starflower oil with food.
